URGENT APPEAL: Police using teargas and chemical-laced water cannons at anti-ISA rally in KL. Over 400 arrested!
According to eyewitnesses and news reports, the police have arrested over 400 people and have been deploying tear gas and chemical-laced water cannons indiscriminately at the anti-ISA rally in KL today. These are some of the unjust actions being taken against individuals attending the 'Himpunan Mansuh ISA' rally that was held Kuala Lumpur today to call for the abolition of the ISA. Water cannons and teargas are reportedly still being deployed at the PAS HQ right now where a press conference is being held.
We condemn the police for their ongoing attacks and intimidation on freedom of expression and right to assembly, fundamental rights which are guaranteed under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Federal Constitution of Malaysia.
We demand that the police take the following actions:
- Stop all use of tear gas and water cannons immediately
- Release these brave activists immediately and unconditionally
- Stop harassing the protestors from exercising their rights to assembly and stop this assult on their freedom of expression
